This past October, Mark and I headed down to the Lone Star State to visit family. We ended up being able to line it up that we could attend the Texas State Fair, which was only about 20 minutes from where we were staying. We opted to go on Saturday...which would typically be filled with people and lines. When Saturday came...it was a down pour, but we still decided to gear up and go to the fair. This ended up being one of the best decisions because the rain kept most people away and we were able to experience the fair with minimal lines for maximum caloric intake. As we were walking around, I thought this would be the perfect topic for my blog. So, without further ado, here are my favorite finds from the Texas far!

Fletcher's Corn Dogs

Fletcher's Corn Dogs was the one place on my list that I really wanted to stop at...and was ready to wait. Thankfully, due to the weather, we only waited for about 3 minutes for a delicious corn dog! I am not a huge hot dog fan, but these were delicious!!! A word of advice... if you ever make it down...there are multiple Fletcher stations so, if you can, avoid the main one near the entrance,, try to go to one of the smaller ones around the fair.

Kool-AID soaked pickles

Umm..I'm sorry...WHAT??? Is this for real? Yes, Yes it is real. It sounds very odd, but the flavors are unlike any other I've ever tried. Essentially, you get a picked and soak it in KOOL-AID mix and it turns into a sweet pickle. If you've ever had bread and butter pickles, it tastes similar..but with a hint of whatever flavor you choose---we opted for grape!

Corn Dog Ale

When I saw this was the beer of the fair, I knew I had to try it. This beer has smoked and caramel malts, flaked corn, plus salt, black pepper, brown mustard powder and some "mystery spices" according to the brewer at Revolver Brewing Co. When the bartender asked if I wanted it rimmed with mustard, I thought she was joking...but she was surely not! It actually tasted like a corn dog in a glass. If only I could get my morning smoothies to taste like this....

Cheetos fried pickles

After visiting Nashville, I fell in love with fried pickles. Speared or chips..I did not discriminate. The State Fair took this love up a notch and coated them in Cheetos rather than regular bread crumb. Obviously served with a side of ranch, this dish was certainly one not to miss.

Wine Pops

Wine pops...or as I like to say, palette cleanser. At some point, after many stops for fried food, everything kind of started tasting the same. I thought my fried food tastings were done...until...we passed a wine pop truck. These pops taste delicious, were filled with wine, and allowed me to reset my taste buds. I mean, what else could a girl ask for?

Sweet Bakin' Bacon

Last but not least, there was the Sweet Bakin' Bacon. Before I had my wine pop, we had walked by this stand. I asked the man behind the counter, "What exactly is a sweet bakin' bacon? " When he told me, my stomach immediately was concerned, but my taste-buds began watering. I opted to pass on this stop, but I couldn't get it out of my head, so on the way out...we had to try it. So, what exactly is it? It is a twinkee, wrapped in bacon, deep fried in funnel cake batter. OH-MY-GOD. The three of us decided to split on of the decadent desserts but it was just enough to satisfy my curiosity.
